Daily Attendance Matters

9 or fewer absences= 95% attendance rate
Students with good attendance generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school more. Learners benefit and make the most of their educational opportunities if they attend school regularly.

10-17 days absent = 90% attendance rate
Students who are absent an average of 15 days a year miss a year’s worth of school before their senior year. When students miss a day of school it actually puts them two days behind their classmates.

18 or more days absent= Chronically absent
Excused and unexcused absences represent lost time in the classroom and lost opportunities to learn. Missing just one day every two weeks can add up to 18 days in a year. Absences add up before you even know it.
Report an Absence
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences & The SART Process
In California TK-12 schools, an excused absence includes reasons such as illness, medical or dental appointments, attending a funeral for an immediate family member, religious observances, or court appearances. Parents or guardians must notify the school to have the absence excused.
The State of California tracks total days missed, regardless of the reason, to determine chronic absenteeism. If a student is on track to miss 10% or more of the school year, our district automatically generates and sends letters to families as a notification. Please note that these letters are not sent by the school site itself.
If we have concerns about your child’s attendance, you will hear directly from us before the letter goes out—or after, if there is a sudden increase in absences. Additionally, students with ongoing attendance issues may be referred to the Student Attendance Review Team (SART), with the potential for further intervention through the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) if absences persist.

Please note that all letters sent home regarding concerns about chronic absenteeism contain language about the SART process. However, this does not automatically mean your student will go through this process—it's simply a precautionary measure.
Additionally, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused, students will be given the same number of days they missed to make up assignments or reschedule assessments. We encourage students to check Google Classroom for any missed assignments or learning experiences to stay on track with their coursework.
If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, reach out to our counselor, Ms. Chacon or our attendane office.
