Math

Students are placed in their math classes based on

PYLUSD placement test criteria.

Each math class uses the Singapore Math Dimensions Curriculum, which follows the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach.

  • Math 6 - (equivalent to accelerated math 6/7 at a traditional public school) - Focuses on developing a strong foundation in math, with key topics such as fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, proportion, and geometry, including circles, triangles, and volume.

  • Pre-Algebra - (equivalent to accelerated math 7/8 at a traditional public school) - Introduces concepts like integers, simple algebraic equations, and foundational algebraic skills, going further into algebra than a typical pre-algebra class.

  • Algebra 1 - Covers more advanced algebraic concepts, including linear equations, inequalities, and potentially quadratic equations.

  • Geometry - Covers a comprehensive range of geometry topics, including measurement, geometric figures, angle relationships, congruence, similarity, area, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem. It emphasizes a deep understanding of spatial relationships, geometric concepts, and their applications in problem-solving.

  • Algebra 2 - (students must successfully complete Algebra 1 and Geometry to take this course) - builds upon Algebra 1 concepts, introducing more advanced topics such as polynomial equations, complex numbers, and trigonometric functions. It emphasizes problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and the use of various strategies like model drawing and algebraic manipulation.

  • Science 7 - Focusing on Earth and Life Sciences, students incorporate the scientific method and engineering practices. Students explore topics like the structure and function of organisms, genetics, cell processes, and ecosystems. They also learn about Earth's materials, the rock cycle, natural resources, and the impact of human activities on the environment.

  • Science 8 - Focusing on Physical Science, students learn about matter, motion, forces, energy, and waves. Students will also delve into engineering design, heredity, and biological evolution.

English

Coordinated Group Instruction

One period of the day is known as "Study Skills". This is the period where students are grouped by ability to target more specific learning needs. This might mean students are grouped to work on increasing skills in math or English, or have a dedicated space to get support on honors projects. This is also the period when schoolwide lessons are given.
