Coordinated Group Instruction

The last period of the day is labeled "study skills" on Aeries. This is the period of the day that occurs the last 40 minutes of the day where students are grouped by ability to target learning needs.  This might mean students are grouped to work on increasing skills in Math and English or have a dedicated space to get support on Honors projects. Schoolwide lessons are also delivered during CGI. This course also focuses on helping students stay organized.

Electives

All students have one schoolwide elective. The main elective offered at the school is our Innovation Lab Elective. Students can also opt to take one of the following electives:

  • Music: Band, Choir, or Orchestra

  • Physical Education

Students enrolled in the Spanish DLA program have the Spanish Literature Course as the main elective. In the 8th grade year students have a zero period opportunity to allow them to take a second elective. For 7th graders, we provide a join band/Spanish Literature elective

Electives

Every student has one main elective. For Spanish DLA 8th graders and 8th grade ASB, we offer a zero period class. These are our elective offerings

Innovation Lab (Graphic Arts)

5 Disciplines in 1 Elective

Students who take Innovation Lab will go through a wheel rotation in the following 5 areas of study: Commercial Art, Industrial Technology Design, Robotics & Coding, and Entrepreneurship & Product Design

Choir

Students who want to engage in stage performance through choir should choose this elective.

Physical Education

Although PE is optional at a charter school, students can opt to make PE their single elective. PE is offered 5 days a week in our model.

Band

Beginning Band is called Performing Band. Students at the beginning level take this course. Advanced Band is called Woodwinds. Advanced performers are placed into this class. We also offer a Zero period Jazz Band, which requires students be enrolled in a instrument based course as their main elective. Auditions are required and occur within the first two weeks of school.

Orchestra

We have a robust Orchestra program with Beginning Orchestra and Advanced Orchestra for both levels of performers.

ASB Leadership

ASB Leadership is an elective opportunity for our 8th graders. Application and interviews are required for entry to the elective. There is limited space available in this elective.

Spanish
The Spanish elective is separate from the Spanish DLA program and is offered for non-native speakers. Spanish 1B is currently offered to 8th graders who were enrolled in Spanish 1A during the 23-24 school year

In the 2025-2026 school year, Spanish 1 will be offered to 8th graders only in person. We have limited space in our Spanish 1 program

Mini Electives

Middle schools were created in the mid-20th century to address the unique developmental needs of pre-adolescents, typically covering grades 6-8. Prior to this, most students attended junior high schools (grades 7-9), but educators recognized that students in early adolescence needed a more flexible and supportive learning environment. Middle schools were designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school, emphasizing both academic growth and personal development. By offering team teaching, interdisciplinary studies, and exploratory programs, middle schools aimed to better support students' cognitive, emotional, and social changes during this critical stage.

More about Mini Electives

At OCSCS, we launched our first round of mini electives with a diverse selection of options for students. While initial choices were based on period availability, we are excited to enhance this process moving forward. Students will now explore four to five distinct pathways of mini electives, allowing them to fully experience the spirit of middle school exploration. This approach ensures that all students have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of interests, while also streamlining the scheduling process to make it a more positive experience for everyone.

A Breakdown of our Mini Elective Schedule

Mini Electives might seem a little tricky at first, but here’s how they work: Your core classes meet 4 times a week for 60 minutes each, and on the 5th day, instead of going to your core class, you’ll go to a Mini Elective during that same time slot. The day your Mini Elective happens depends on the subject.

  • Every Tuesday, you’ll attend a Mini Elective during your History, English, Spanish Literature, or Spanish 1B block.

  • Every Wednesday, you’ll have a Mini Elective during your Science or Math block.

  • Every Thursday, you’ll attend a Mini Elective during your ASB class or during your Music or Innovation Lab elective.

PE meets 5 days a week, and zero period classes don’t have Mini Electives.

Also, since our core classes are 60 minutes long, you get more learning time than at most other middle schools!

For a sample of a mini elective schedule you MUST be on a computer web/version to view the sample schedule. A sample schedule is not available on the mobile version at this time.
