Goal Attainment Scales

Our goal attainment scales consist of nine levels (1-9) that provide a clear framework for measuring student growth over time. Each level reflects a student’s mastery of specific skills and content, with Level 7 indicating grade-level achievement. A level 9 is a stretch that we aim to expose our students to so that they are competitive going into the next grade level content and skills.

The validity of these scales as a measurement tool stems from their alignment with learning intentions and success criteria, their focus on specific criteria for each level, and their ability to capture incremental progress. Research has shown that goal attainment scaling reduces variability in scoring, leading to more consistent and objective assessments of student performance. This approach allows educators to provide meaningful data that informs instruction effectively. As students progress throughout the academic year, their scores can increase, demonstrating their growth and understanding of the material. By emphasizing growth rather than just final outcomes, the goal attainment scales support a more comprehensive view of each learner’s journey and promote continuous improvement.
