At OCSCS, students are taught using Singapore Math - a teaching method developed in Singaporean schools that emphasizes a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through a three-step learning process: concrete, pictorial, and abstract (CPA). It prioritizes conceptual understanding over rote memorization and focuses on building strong problem-solving skills through visualization and mental math strategies.

Students are placed in their math classes based on PYLUSD placement test criteria. But district challenge tests are available in Spring for qualifying students that want to advance their placement. We also use placement tests for students who are new to our district and math placement is not cear from their transcripts.

Once students are placed, they follow the math pathway (as shown below).

Singapore Math

At our school, we proudly implement the Singapore Math Dimensions curriculum for grades 6-8, a proven approach that fosters deep understanding and mastery of mathematical concepts. This curriculum emphasizes problem-solving and critical thinking skills, equipping students with the tools they need to tackle real-world challenges.

The Singapore Math Dimensions program is structured around three key components: concepts, skills, and problem-solving. Students first learn to grasp essential concepts through a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, where they manipulate physical objects, visualize problems with drawings, and then solve equations symbolically. This method not only enhances comprehension but also encourages students to think critically and creatively.

Key Features:

  • Focus on Deep Understanding: Students explore mathematical ideas in depth, leading to a stronger foundation in math.

  • Real-World Applications: The curriculum connects math to real-life situations, making it relevant and engaging.

  • Rigorous Problem Solving: Students tackle challenging problems that develop their analytical skills and boost their confidence in math.

By enrolling your student in our school, you are ensuring they receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in high school and beyond. Our commitment to the Singapore Math Dimensions curriculum means that students will not only excel in math but also develop a lifelong love for learning.
